I don't think you understand what you are looking at in the screenshot. The 6-digit login code you get asked to type in is the code you get either from Google authenticator or an SMS message. It's when you click the "need another way to authenticate" that you get asked to use the code generator, since it is the backup method.
The primary window you see that asks you to type in a 6-digit login code = You are suppose to use the code generated by Google authenticator or the text message code, but the "code generator" code also works there since they are linked.
"Need another way of authenticate"-button = tells you to use the "code generator" function because it is your backup method of authentication. It's only meant to be used if you have lost access to your primary method.
Again, the option to use "code generator" is not even available until you configure a primary method of authenticating such as through Google authenticator or SMS. You MUST have configured a different method. It's just that you lost that method and has forgotten about it.
